What you need to know

3D foam gives your designs a creative boost, but the technique can be intricate. Size and design are critical to achieving the best effect.

• Best Suited For: Items that don't require frequent heavy washing, such as caps, jackets, and outerwear.

• The Process: Foam is inserted under the top stitch to raise the surface.

Important Considerations:

• Complexity: If a design is too intricate, small, or closely spaced, 3D foam will not work.

• Stitch Type: 3D foam works best with Satin Stitching. If your object cannot be digitised in satin, foam should not be used.

• Foam Colour: We match the foam colour to your top thread so any excess remains invisible.

• Thread Coverage: If the design is too thick, the thread may not provide full coverage over the foam base.

Why is the 3D Foam Technique Different?

Unlike standard flat embroidery, 3D techniques require:

• Capping: Separate objects are created to "cap" corners to ensure the foam is fully covered.

• Increased Density: Stitch spacing must be denser to cut and cover the foam.

• Specialised Tension: Top thread tension is typically loosened to allow the foam to "puff."

• Pull Compensation: Extra adjustments are made to account for the thickness of the foam.
